The Three Chemical Steps in Sequence
Developer converts exposed silver halide crystals into metallic silver, creating the visible image. Stop bath halts development instantly and neutralizes developer carried over in the liquid. Fixer dissolves all unexposed silver halide, making the image permanent and stable in light. Each step must complete fully before the next begins.

Mixing Developer Stock
D-76 dissolves in hot water at 125°F, then cools to room temperature before use. Mix the entire packet at once — partial batches create incorrect ratios. Store in a full sealed bottle; a half-full bottle oxidizes quickly.
Choosing the Right Dilution
D-76 at stock gives fine grain and full film speed. D-76 at 1:1 adds edge sharpness and is single-use. Rodinal at 1:50 preserves highlight detail in contrasty light. HC-110 dilution B is well suited to push processing.
Chemical Safety and Storage
Gloves worn when mixing or handling fixer — it contains ammonia compounds
Work in ventilated area, especially for acid stop bath fumes
Developer disposed as photographic chemical waste or heavily diluted
Fixer tested with hypo-check drops before each reuse session
All bottles labeled, capped, and dated with mix date
Fixer Exhaustion Fixer loses capacity with each roll processed. Exhausted fixer leaves milky areas on the negative where unexposed silver was not dissolved. Test fixer by dropping a small piece of unexposed film leader into a sample — it should clear in half the normal fixing time. If clearing takes longer than that, the fixer is exhausted and must be replaced.
Push Processing — Rating Film Above Box Speed
Pushing film means exposing at a higher ISO than the box speed and compensating with longer development time. HP5 Plus rated at ISO 1600 (a 2-stop push) requires approximately 30 to 40 percent longer development than box speed. Shadow detail compresses but highlight separation increases dramatically. Pull processing is the reverse: lower ISO rating, reduced development, compressed overall contrast.
