The Big Number

On 4 July 1776, fifty-six delegates signed a document that made thirteen British colonies into something the world had never quite seen before. Two hundred and fifty years later the country they founded is home to 335 million people, anchors the largest economy on Earth, and is holding the largest birthday party in its history. The Semiquincentennial is the official name. Most Americans just call it America 250.

The last comparable milestone was the Centennial in 1876, held in Philadelphia with the first official World's Fair on American soil. The Bicentennial in 1976 brought Operation Sail to New York Harbor. The 250th eclipses both in scale: six Freedom Trucks are touring all 48 contiguous states throughout 2026, aiming to reach 20 million Americans at schools, libraries, and national parks.

The word Semiquincentennial comes from Latin: semi (half), quinque (five) and centennial (hundred years). It means one half of five hundred, or 250. Congress created the US Semiquincentennial Commission in 2016, a full decade before the date, to plan what became the largest coordinated public celebration in American history.

different Americans. The Declaration promised equality; the Constitution protected slavery for another 77 years. Is the Semiquincentennial a moment to celebrate what was built, to reckon with what was broken, or both at once?
