Small-Scale Aquaponics System

Aquaponics combines fish production with vegetable growing in a recirculating system. Fish waste feeds the plants, plants clean the water for the fish. A well-cycled system is nearly self-sustaining and water-efficient.

Design the Tank System

A 200 to 500 liter fish tank with a sump and grow beds is a workable beginner system. Flood and drain media beds are the most forgiving design for first-time builders. Size grow beds to tank volume ratio at 1 to 1 minimum.

Build or Source Grow Beds

Use food-safe containers filled with expanded clay pebbles or lava rock. Depth of 30 cm allows deep-rooted vegetables. Install a bell siphon for automatic flood and drain cycling.

Choose and Stock Fish

Tilapia are hardy and grow fast in warm climates. Trout suit cooler setups. Goldfish work for ornamental systems. Stock at 20 to 30 kg per 1000 liters after the system has fully cycled.

System Setup Checklist

0%

Tank, sump, and grow beds positioned and plumbed

Water pump sized for 2x tank volume per hour

Air pump and airstones installed in fish tank

Cycling started with ammonia source

Ammonia, nitrite, and nitrate test kits on hand

pH meter calibrated and reading 6.8 to 7.2

The nitrogen cycle takes 4 to 8 weeks to establish. Do not add fish until ammonia and nitrite have peaked and returned to zero. Patience here prevents a tank of dead fish.
