Where to Start with Hand Bookbinding
Bookbinding ranges from simple three-hole pamphlet stitch — achievable in 20 minutes — to complex multi-signature case binding that takes days. Start with a pamphlet stitch or a single-signature book. These require only folded paper, a needle, waxed linen thread, a bone folder, and a cover material. Mastering the basic signatures and sewing patterns gives you the foundation for every more complex structure.

Fold sheets in half to form signatures and crease firmly with bone folder.

A signature is a group of nested folded sheets. Fold 4 to 5 sheets of text-weight paper together in half. Run a bone folder firmly along the fold to set a crisp crease. For a single-signature book, one folded group of 4 to 8 sheets (16 to 32 pages) is enough. Stack neatly. The folded edge is the spine.

Mark stitch holes evenly along the spine and pierce with an awl.

Open the signature flat. Mark 3 to 5 holes evenly along the spine crease — always an odd number. Place holes 1/2 inch from the head and tail, with remaining holes equally spaced between. Pierce cleanly through all layers with a bookbinding awl or a sharp needle. A beeswax block helps: run thread across it before sewing to reduce friction and strengthen the stitch.

Thread a needle, begin at the center hole, and follow the stitch pattern.

Cut linen thread 3 times the spine length. Thread a needle without knotting. Enter the center hole from inside the signature pushing outward. Go to the end hole and enter from outside pushing in. Run along the inside to the opposite end hole, exit outward. Return to the center hole from outside. Tie off by wrapping around the long center thread and tying a square knot. Trim to 1/4 inch.

Score cover stock, fold, and bind or glue over the sewn signature.

Cut cover stock slightly larger than the text block — 1/8 inch on all three open edges, flush at the spine. Score and fold along the spine line with a bone folder. You can sew the cover on as part of the pamphlet stitch (simpler) or attach with a thin bead of PVA glue along the spine fold and clamp until dry.
