Designing and Printing a Tabletop RPG Zine at Home
Designing and printing a tabletop RPG zine at home. Covers the full pipeline from game design concept through writing, layout, home printing, and saddle stitch binding.
8to 16 Pages
A5Format
Game Design
Define the core mechanic before writing. Choose a resolution system: dice pool, single die, card draw, or diceless. Write a one-sentence pitch. Scope the zine to what fits in your page count.
Writing the Content
Write rules first, fiction second. Use plain language. Leave room for player interpretation. Include at least one random table. Write procedures, not just descriptions.
Printing and Binding
Print duplex on A4 or letter paper, saddle stitch on A5 fold. Use a long-arm stapler or awl and waxed thread for binding. Print a cover on heavier card stock if possible.
Zine Production Checklist
Core mechanic finalized
Page count set before writing
Layout complete with bleed margins
Proofread once on screen and once printed
Cover designed and print-ready
Binding materials ready
Print one copy first as a proof before printing the full run. Check page order, margins, and fold alignment on the proof copy before committing to paper.
