Build a Small Wind Turbine for Your Home
Safety and Permitting for Small Wind Turbines
Key safety considerations and permitting requirements before installing a small wind turbine at home or off-grid property.
Safety and Permitting Checklist
Check local zoning laws for tower height restrictions
Verify setback requirements from property lines and structures
Apply for a building permit if tower exceeds local height limits
Notify your utility if grid-tied or if required by local code
Conduct a soil test before setting tower foundation
Use rated guy wire and turnbuckles for all tower anchors
Install an overspeed protection or furling system on the turbine
Include a dump load resistor bank to protect batteries from overcharge
Add a manual disconnect switch accessible from ground level
Inspect all guy wire anchors and tower hardware annually
Never work on a turbine tower alone. Always have a second person present when raising, lowering, or servicing the tower. Use a safety harness rated for climbing work if you ascend the tower for any reason.
