DIY Electric Longboard Build

Build a custom electric longboard from a deck, trucks, dual hub motors or belt drives, an ESC, a lithium battery pack, and a handheld remote. Budget builds start around $300.

Choose the Deck and Trucks

A 38 to 42 inch drop-through deck gives a stable, low ride height. Use 218mm trucks for stability at speed. Caliber or Paris trucks work well with most motor mounts and pulleys.

Build the Drivetrain

Hub motors are the simplest option: no belt, no pulley, motors fit inside the wheels. Belt drive gives more torque and easier wheel swaps. Choose based on your terrain and mechanical confidence.

Wire the Electronics

Mount the ESC inside a 3D printed or aluminum enclosure on the deck underside. Wire the battery to the ESC with an antispark connector. Pair the remote receiver to the ESC before final assembly.

Test braking at low speed before a full-speed run

VESC-based speed controllers are the most configurable option and have a strong open-source community. The VESC Tool software allows fine-tuning of motor detection, braking strength, and speed limits.
