Salkantay Trek

A 113 km five day trek through the Peruvian Andes, considered the classic alternative to the permit limited Inca Trail and ending at Machu Picchu. The route crosses the 4,650 metre Salkantay Pass beneath glaciated peaks before dropping into cloud forest and the Aobamba valley.

Best hiked May through September during the dry season, and spend at least two days acclimatising in Cusco before starting to handle the pass altitude. No trek permit is required but you must book a separate Machu Picchu entry ticket well in advance, as daily quotas sell out fast.
