Nakasendo Way

An Edo era post road that once linked Kyoto to the shogun's capital through the Kiso Valley, passing 69 traditional post towns along the way. The Magome to Tsumago section is the most popular taster, a few cobbled hours past waterwheels and dark wood inns that look almost untouched since the samurai walked them.

Walk it April to May or October to November for cherry blossom or maple colour, and avoid August's wet heat and bears. A free luggage forwarding service runs daily between Magome and Tsumago in season, so you can stroll the classic section unencumbered and pick up your bag at the next inn.
