Fimmvörðuháls
Fimmvörðuháls is the high pass that threads between two of Iceland's great ice caps, Eyjafjallajökull and Mýrdalsjökull, dropping from Skógafoss past a long string of waterfalls and the steaming 2010 eruption craters into Þórsmörk. It is often tacked onto the Laugavegur for a four to six day Highland traverse.
Only attempt mid July to early September when snow on the pass has melted; carry full waterproofs, a map and GPS, as fog rolls in fast and the route is exposed and unmarked in poor visibility.
