A short valley walk. The lake opens up without warning. Both mountain inns serve Alpstein cheese.
The hard part. A steep ascent to 1855 m. The Alpstein reveals its full scale from the top.
Descent to near-black water ringed by limestone cliffs. Bollenwees hut below. Eerie and still.
A long walk through open pasture. The third lake is quieter and wide. Cattle and cowbells.
The trail flattens into forest and meadow. Brülisau appears. The day has been earned.

Wasserauen is reachable by train from St. Gallen in under an hour via Appenzell. No car needed. The circuit finishes at Brülisau with a PostAuto back to Appenzell.

Fählensee can stay frozen into May. The Widderalpsattel holds snow until June in a heavy winter. Check conditions on alpstein.ch before any early season attempt.
