Steep from the first step with no mercy. Rest stops along the way to eat and recover make it manageable. Arrived at base camp late afternoon. Already running on fumes.
An optional add-on at extra cost. Dark, raining, zero visibility at the top. Rain in your face, wind pushing you toward the edge, Fuego loud and close. Came back defeated.
Dinner. Tried to watch eruptions through the clouds but saw little. The sound made up for it. Fuego rumbles every 20 minutes and you fall asleep to that after the effort of the day. Brutally cold.
Skipped the 4am push. Built a fire for the group instead. The right call. The others faced brutal wind and rain on the way up but did catch the sunrise from 3976m.
Legs heavy, head clear. The cloud forest feels different on the way down. Hard to put a name on what this experience is. Unique. Worth every bit of it.

The hike starts at La Soledad village, around 1 hour from Antigua by shuttle or tuk-tuk. Guides are required for the national park section above base camp.
Temperatures at base camp drop to 0°C or below. Get warm enough clothes to get through the night.
Fuego erupts roughly every 20 minutes. The eruptions are the whole point. Do not skip the overnight!
