Verity
A ghostwriter moves into a thriller author's home to finish her series and finds a manuscript that cannot be published.
The Manuscript in the Walls
Colleen Hoover's 2018 novel follows Lowen Ashby, a financially desperate writer who accepts an offer to complete bestselling thriller author Verity Crawford's series while Verity recovers from an accident. Moving into the Crawford home and working with Verity's husband Jeremy, Lowen discovers a hidden autobiography in which Verity confesses to terrible things involving her children. The question that drives every chapter is whether the manuscript is the truth or the fiction of a disturbed mind.

"You are the only person who has ever made me want to be better than I am.
"Colleen Hoover
Hoover self-published Verity in 2018 as a departure from her established romance brand. It became a BookTok phenomenon years later when readers began posting reactions to the ending, which Hoover deliberately leaves ambiguous.
The novel sold over four million copies in 2022 alone, driven entirely by reader recommendation on TikTok. Hoover became the first author to have an entire chart-topping sales week driven by BookTok content rather than traditional media.
