Beech Tops to Nikau Coast
A 78 km Great Walk across Kahurangi National Park, climbing through red beech forest and the open Gouland Downs before dropping to a wild West Coast lined with nikau palms. Spread over four to six days, it is the longest of the South Island Great Walks and the most varied.
Book DOC huts well ahead for the Great Walks season from late October to April, and arrange shuttle transport between the Brown Hut and Kohaihai trailheads since the road ends are six hours apart by car.
