> Axolotls are the only vertebrates that retain their larval form into adulthood. They are also absurdly charming.

## Keeping Axolotls at Home

Axolotls are fully aquatic salamanders that never undergo metamorphosis. They require cool, well-filtered water and specific parameters. They are illegal to own in some US states; check local regulations before acquiring one.

**18** Celsius

**20** Gallons

Set Up the Tank

Description: Use a 20-gallon or larger tank with a gentle filter (sponge filter recommended to avoid fin damage). Add a dark substrate of fine sand. Avoid gravel larger than the axolotl's head to prevent impaction.

Maintain Water Parameters

Description: Target pH 7.0 to 8.0, ammonia 0, nitrite 0, nitrate under 20 ppm. Cycle the tank fully before adding an axolotl. Keep temperature between 14 and 18 Celsius year-round. Use a chiller in warm climates.

Feed Correctly

Description: Feed juveniles daily, adults every two to three days. Use earthworms as a staple diet. Bloodworms and axolotl pellets are good supplements. Remove uneaten food within an hour to keep water clean.

Setup Checklist

0%

Confirm axolotl ownership is legal in your state or country

Fully cycle the tank (4 to 6 weeks) before adding the animal

Install a thermometer and test water parameters daily for first month

Set up a chiller or cooling method for summer months

Source earthworms from pesticide-free suppliers

Prepare a hospital tank for quarantine and health issues

Never house axolotls with fish. Fish nip at axolotl gills and can cause serious stress and injury. Axolotls do best alone or with same-species tankmates.
