## The Sleeper Network Is Back, and 2026 Is Its Biggest Year in Two Decades

Europe's overnight rail network collapsed between 2000 and 2016 as airlines undercut it on price and operators cut routes rather than invest. The reversal started slowly around 2019 and accelerated hard. OBB Nightjet took over abandoned Deutsche Bahn sleeper routes, then kept expanding. European Sleeper, a Dutch-Belgian cooperative, launched in 2023 and has added a route every year since. By November 2026, you can board a sleeper in Paris after dinner and wake up in Berlin, Hamburg, or Milan without touching an airport. The economics have shifted, too. A couchette fare that includes transport plus an overnight stay competes directly with a budget flight plus a city-centre hostel bed. Factor in airport transit time and the train often wins on total door-to-door hours.

## Every Active Route in 2026

The table below covers scheduled sleeper services with public booking. Luxury trains (Venice Simplon-Orient-Express, Belmond Grand Hibernian) are excluded: they are experiences priced at EUR 1,000 plus per person and are not pass-compatible. Sample fares are for a seat or cheapest couchette, single adult, booked in advance. Fares vary widely by date and lead time. As of November 2026.

## Seat and Couchette: the Two Affordable Tiers

Every sleeper operator uses roughly the same three tiers. The names vary but the experience is consistent across operators. A seat is the cheapest option: a reclining chair in a shared carriage, similar to an economy overnight bus. It works for shorter routes under eight hours if you sleep easily in a seat. OBB's new-fleet sets have improved the seat with more recline and privacy screens, but it is still a shared chair. A couchette is the most popular choice. Six fold-down berths in a shared open compartment, three on each side. You get a pillow and blanket. The berths are narrow but horizontal, and most people sleep adequately. A 4-berth couchette on European Sleeper has slightly more room. You share the space with strangers: not private, but functional. Lock valuables in your bag or the small overhead shelf.

## Sleeper and Mini-Cabin: Private Overnight Options

A private sleeper is a lockable compartment for one, two, or three people. You get bedding, sometimes a small sink, and usually a wake-up service with breakfast. It is the classic overnight train experience and suits anyone who needs a good night's sleep. OBB's new fleet introduced the mini-cabin: a single lockable pod with a full-length berth, reading light, and USB power. It sits between a couchette and a traditional sleeper in both price and privacy. Sample fare for a mini-cabin on Vienna to Hamburg is EUR 129. It is the fastest-selling tier on the new routes: book it early.

## How to Book and What Using an Interrail Pass Actually Costs

Direct booking is always available from the operator's website. OBB Nightjet sells all its own routes. European Sleeper sells through its own site and through Trainline. Seat61.com links every operator's booking page and is the most reliable neutral reference for which options are open. With an Interrail Global Pass you do not pay the base fare, but you pay a mandatory reservation fee on every sleeper. For OBB Nightjet the reservation fee covers the accommodation supplement: EUR 4.90 to 24.90 for a seat, EUR 19.90 to 94.90 for a couchette, EUR 59.90 and up for a sleeper or mini-cabin. For European Sleeper the pass reservation is EUR 3 to 8 for a seat and EUR 15 to 35 for a couchette. The pass saves the most on shorter routes where the base fare is high relative to the reservation surcharge. On a Vienna to Rome couchette (EUR 189 open fare vs EUR 59.90 pass reservation) a pass pays off if you are using it for other trains that trip.

Nightjet reservation fees are charged in addition to the pass. Book them through the Interrail app or the OBB website after activating the pass. Availability is limited: book as soon as you know your dates, especially for mini-cabins and private sleepers.

## Before You Board: Packing and Berth Strategy

Pack light. The overhead shelf in a couchette fits a daypack easily. A large rolling suitcase goes under the bottom berth and limits everyone's legroom. If you end up in a top berth, you cannot reach a bag stowed below until morning. Board early. Compartments fill in boarding order. The bottom berth is the most comfortable for most people: easier to get in and out, warmer, and no climbing in the dark. Arriving on the platform 15 minutes before departure usually secures it. Ear plugs and a sleep mask help. The train rocks and creaks: noticeable for the first 20 minutes and then becomes white noise for most people. Ear plugs take care of the rest. The carriage stays warm all night, so a light sleeping layer is enough.

## On Arrival: What to Do at 7 AM

Most sleeper trains pull into their destination between 7 and 9 AM. Hotels rarely allow check-in before noon. Use city luggage lockers (available at most major European stations through Stasher or the station's own left-luggage office) to drop your bag and start the day without dragging it around. If you have an Interrail pass, your arrival day counts as a travel day only if you used the pass on the overnight service. If you bought a point-to-point sleeper ticket instead, the arrival day is free for any other travel.
