## What just happened on the Tourmalet

On 9 July 2026, Stage 6 from Pau to Gavarnie-Gedre (186.2 km) turned the Tour de France into a one-man race. Tadej Pogacar attacked 5 km from the summit of the Col du Tourmalet after his UAE teammate Isaac del Toro set a pace that shattered the field. Jonas Vingegaard cracked immediately. Pogacar crested the summit 31 seconds clear, then gained a further 40 seconds on the technical descent into the Gavarnie cirque, finishing 2 minutes and 42 seconds ahead of the Dane. He rode 43 km alone. He set a new climbing record on the Tourmalet. He now leads the General Classification with 15 stages left to race, including the only time trial, the Massif Central on Bastille Day, the Vosges, and a double summit finish on Alpe d'Huez that has never been attempted in 113 editions of the Tour. Vingegaard said he still believes.

Vingegaard's defiance. He dropped 2 minutes and 42 seconds to Pogacar on Stage 6 but told reporters: "It was not my best day, but there are fifteen stages left and I still believe in myself." A 2:42 gap is historically considered race-ending. But the time trial on Stage 16 and the back-to-back Alpe d'Huez summit finishes on Stages 19 and 20 mean it is not mathematically impossible. Vingegaard beat Pogacar in 2022 and 2023. He will not fold quietly.

Stage 6 winner

Pogacar, 23rd Tour de France stage win

History on the line. A fourth Tour de France title for Pogacar would equal Louison Bobet and Greg LeMond. A fifth would equal the record shared by Anquetil, Merckx, Hinault, and Indurain. He is 25 years old. If he wins in Paris on 26 July, the greatest-of-all-time debate in cycling begins in earnest.

Stage 20, the queen stage. The Col du Galibier at 2,642 m is the highest point of the 2026 Tour. Stage 20 adds the Croix de Fer (22.5 km at 5.2%), the Telegraphe, and the Col de Sarenne before a second consecutive summit finish on Alpe d'Huez. 5,600 m of climbing total. Whoever survives that day will almost certainly win the yellow jersey. Back-to-back Alpe d'Huez finishes have never appeared in 113 editions of the race before.
