## Opening Night Is Tomorrow. Here Is Everything That Matters.

The NBA's 81st regular season tips off Tuesday, October 20, 2026. Three games, all on NBC and Peacock. The New York Knicks raise the first championship banner Madison Square Garden has seen since 1973, then immediately play the team that just handed LeBron James a veteran-minimum contract. Across the country, Victor Wembanyama and the San Antonio Spurs host the Oklahoma City Thunder in a rematch of last season's Western Conference Finals. This is what the whole season is about, compressed into one night. As of October 19, 2026.

## The Knicks Won. Now They Have to Do It Again.

Jalen Brunson and the Knicks beat the San Antonio Spurs 4-1 in the 2026 NBA Finals, ending a 53-year wait. The last team to repeat as champion was the Golden State Warriors in 2018. New York has an immediate problem: Brunson, OG Anunoby, Mikal Bridges, and Karl-Anthony Towns are all either in the final year of their deals or coming up for extensions. The team that won is more expensive to keep together than it was to build. Title odds: +1000 (Knicks). Good enough to be taken seriously; not good enough to be the favourite.

## LeBron James, 76ers Uniform, 24th Season

LeBron James signed a two-year veteran-minimum contract worth $7.9 million to join the Philadelphia 76ers alongside Joel Embiid, Jaylen Brown, and Tyrese Maxey. He is 41 years old and beginning his 24th NBA season. The ceiling is obvious: four players who have each carried teams to Finals appearances. The floor is also obvious: Embiid has missed entire playoff series with injury, Brown is a divisive fit on any team, and none of the four are natural defenders. Philadelphia is simultaneously the Eastern Conference's highest ceiling and its most uncertain bet. Title odds: +1000 (76ers).

## Giannis Antetokounmpo, Miami Heat

After 13 seasons in Milwaukee, Giannis Antetokounmpo was traded to the Miami Heat. He is 31 years old, two-time MVP, one-time champion (2021). The Heat are a franchise that has turned role players into legends and brought the best out of aging stars. The question is not whether Giannis will dominate; it is whether the roster around him is deep enough. Shooting and spacing are concerns. His return to Fiserv Forum in Milwaukee will be one of the most anticipated games of the regular season. Title odds: +3000 (Heat).

## The West Co-Favourites: Spurs and Thunder

San Antonio and Oklahoma City are joint title favourites at roughly +250 to +270. The Spurs made the NBA Finals last season, losing 4-1 to New York, and Victor Wembanyama is entering year four at 22 years old. The Thunder are the best regular-season team in the league for two consecutive years and lost the 2026 Western Conference Finals to San Antonio in seven games while two rotation players were out injured. Both teams are young, deep, and healthy. The West opens as a genuinely two-team race at the top.

San Antonio Spurs

+260 (co-favourites)

Oklahoma City Thunder

+250 (co-favourites)

Philadelphia 76ers

+900

New York Knicks

+900 (defending champions)

Boston Celtics

+1400

Miami Heat

+3000

Detroit Pistons

+2500 (Cade Cunningham MVP candidate)

## The Rookie Class Is the Deepest in Years

The 2026 NBA Draft has four players with genuine franchise-builder potential. No. 1 overall pick AJ Dybantsa (Washington Wizards, from BYU) is 6-foot-9 and led college basketball in scoring as a freshman. No. 2 pick Darryn Peterson (Utah Jazz, from Kansas) was considered by many to be the better prospect, with 38.2 percent shooting from three and a defensive edge. No. 3 pick Cameron Boozer (Memphis Grizzlies, from Duke) is the most NBA-ready of the three. The Rookie of the Year race is wide open. Current odds: Boozer +300, Peterson +330, Dybantsa +425.
