## The Youngest World Championship Match in Chess History

Gukesh D of India and Javokhir Sindarov of Uzbekistan will be 20 years old when they meet in Geneva on November 24. No World Chess Championship match has ever featured two players this young. Gukesh won the 2024 title in Singapore, defeating Ding Liren 7.5 to 6.5. Sindarov earned his shot by winning the 2025 FIDE World Cup and the 2026 Candidates Tournament without losing a single classical game. The match runs to 14 games, ending December 12. The prize fund is $2.5 million. As of October 17, 2026.

## The Defending Champion: Gukesh D

Gukesh Dommaraju became the youngest undisputed World Champion in history when he beat Ding Liren in 2024 at age 18. He does not play for draws. His approach is to create imbalance and outthink opponents in complex positions where precise calculation decides the game. As White he favors the Reti System and the King's Indian Attack. As Black he plays the Sicilian and the Queen's Gambit Declined. His peak FIDE rating was 2794. After a difficult 2025 (41st at the Grand Swiss, third-round exit at the World Cup), his October 2026 rating is 2710, world ranking 28. He enters this match as an underdog for the first time.

He won the 2025 FIDE World Cup in Singapore, defeating Wei Yi in the final. He then won the 2026 Candidates Tournament in Cyprus with 10 points from 14 games, a 1.5-point margin of victory, without a single loss across both events. His style is fast and fearless: he plays quickly to put psychological pressure on opponents, relies on deep preparation with his seconds, and has shown exceptional defensive resilience. ## Who Is the Favourite?

Sindarov is rated 72 points higher and holds the better recent form. Early bookmaker odds placed him at roughly 70 percent to win the match. Magnus Carlsen considers Sindarov the stronger and more complete player right now. Fabiano Caruana also favors the challenger, by around 55 to 45. The counterargument is experience: Gukesh has already won a World Championship match under the same pressure, playing classical games with the title on the line. Sindarov has not. He has said: "I didn't take what he played in the last tournaments seriously because during a match he can be completely different. I'm trying to prepare for his best chess form."
