Questions Asked Out Loud
Bergman took a one act play he had written for drama students and turned it into the most quoted religious argument in cinema. A knight returns from the crusades to a Sweden emptied by plague, meets Death on a beach and proposes chess, not to win but to delay long enough to do one meaningful thing. Around that runs a travelling company of players, a blacksmith, a mute girl, a self flagellating procession and a witch burning, and the film moves between them without settling into allegory. What keeps it alive is that Bergman gives the atheist, the believer and the indifferent equal weight and refuses to referee. The images, photographed by Gunnar Fischer in hard Nordic light, are so strong that they have become shorthand for cinema itself.

I want knowledge, not faith, not suppositions, but knowledge.

:CHECKLIST
What to watch for
[ ] Death played straight, patient and almost courteous, never as a monster
[ ] The players' family as the film's only characters granted a future
[ ] The church painter explaining why he paints what sells
[ ] Wild strawberries and milk as the film's argument against its own metaphysics
[ ] The final dance shot, which Bergman filmed quickly with stand ins when the light broke

Bengt Ekerot's Death wears no makeup beyond white face and a black cowl, and Bergman instructed him to play it as a considerate professional rather than a threat.

:NOTE.half
The dance of death that closes the film was improvised in minutes when a cloud arrived: most of the actors had gone home and the figures on the ridge are largely crew.
