## Sunset Boulevard (1950)

Hollywood's most savage film about Hollywood was made inside the studio system with real casualties of it in the cast.

Runtime

110 minutes

Director

Billy Wilder

Budget

$1.8 million

Box office

$5 million worldwide

Cinematography

John F. Seitz

## Casting As Autopsy

Wilder's masterstroke is that the film is not acted by people pretending to be forgotten. Gloria Swanson had been one of the largest stars of the silent era and had not had a hit in twenty years. Erich von Stroheim, who plays her butler and first husband, really had directed her, and really had been destroyed by the studios as a director. The silent film Norma screens in her living room is Stroheim's own unfinished Queen Kelly, with Swanson in it. Buster Keaton plays bridge. Cecil B. DeMille plays himself, kindly. Around that, Wilder builds a noir: a broke screenwriter hides his car in a garage on Sunset, is mistaken for an undertaker, and takes a job rewriting a delusional script because the rent is due.

The Pool

Posthumous

"A body floats face down in a Beverly Hills swimming pool and starts explaining how it got there."

> I am big. It's the pictures that got small.

Wilder's first cut opened in a morgue, with corpses discussing how they died. Preview audiences laughed, so the narration was moved to the swimming pool.

Louis B. Mayer reportedly told Wilder at the premiere that he had disgraced the industry and should be run out of town. Wilder's reply is not printable.

The film's targets were all still alive and working, which is why it plays as unsentimental rather than nostalgic. It is also the origin of the idea that Hollywood is a system that consumes people and keeps the receipts, an argument picked up by The Bad and the Beautiful, The Player, Mulholland Drive and Once Upon a Time in Hollywood. Swanson never got another part to match it and knew exactly what she was playing.
