The result is a comedy about a genuine industry catastrophe: microphones hidden in shrubbery, actresses who cannot hit a mark, a leading lady whose voice ends careers, playback going out of sync in front of a paying audience. All of it happened. Kelly and Donen stage the disasters with documentary precision and then answer them with three of the greatest dance numbers on film. The dubbing plot also has a sting the film never quite admits to: Debbie Reynolds, playing the girl whose real voice saves the picture, was herself partly dubbed. :JOURNEY Watching Singin' in the Rain 2 Invented 3 Panicked 4 Punished 4 Farcical 5 Ecstatic 5 Exposed :QUOTE [quotetype:plain, subtitle:Lina Lamont · Singin' in the Rain · 1952] What's the matter with the way I talk? :NOTE.half Kelly shot the title number with a fever of around thirty nine degrees, and milk was mixed into the water so the rain would register on camera against the studio lighting. :NOTE.half Jean Hagen's Lina is a performance inside a performance: Hagen had a trained stage voice and plays a woman with none, then dubs Debbie Reynolds's dubbing in one scene. :NOTE It was a modest hit and no awards film, and its reputation grew slowly until it became the default answer to what a musical can be. The reason it lasts is the same reason it works as history: every gag is about labour. People in this film are always working, learning diction, hanging from wires, redoing a take because a machine cannot hear them. The joy is earned by visible effort, which is why the numbers still land on a phone screen seventy years later. :LINK https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0045152/ Singin' in the Rain on IMDb: full cast and crew
