## The Wrong Film At The Right Time

By 1931 the industry had converted to sound and the Tramp had no voice worth giving him, so Chaplin kept him silent and spent two and a half years on a film everyone told him was obsolete. He wrote the score himself. The premise is a misunderstanding that cannot be spoken away: a blind flower seller takes the Tramp for a wealthy man, and he lets her, then spends the film raising money to cure her sight knowing exactly what she will see when it works. Alongside it runs a drunk millionaire who embraces the Tramp as a friend every night and fails to recognise him every morning, which is the same joke about class told as farce. The famous opening of the flower stall scene took Chaplin months of retakes to get the sightlines exactly right.

The Unveiling

Ridiculed

"A civic monument is unveiled with a tramp asleep in the marble arms of Peace and Prosperity."

Chaplin composed the score himself with Arthur Johnston, and used a sound film's tools to mock sound: the opening speeches are played as kazoo noise rather than words.

The final shot is routinely described as the greatest close up in cinema. James Agee wrote that it was the highest moment in movies, and Chaplin himself never tried to better it.
