Advanced Micro Devices closed at $613.92 on September 21, 2026, crossing a $1 trillion market capitalisation for the first time in the company's history. The intraday gain was roughly 10%, part of a five-day run in which the stock climbed 24%. Year to date in 2026, AMD is up 185%. For context: at the peak of the dot-com bubble in 2000, Intel briefly touched $500 billion in market value while AMD was worth about $12 billion. The gap was forty times. As of this week, AMD sits above $1 trillion and Intel sits near $648 billion, $352 billion behind the company it once dwarfed. ## The Decade That Flipped the Scoreboard

Two years ago, neither AMD nor Intel was winning. In 2024, Intel lost 60% of its value as manufacturing setbacks, missed AI pivots, and yield failures piled up simultaneously. AMD fell 18% the same year, unable to match Nvidia's H100 dominance. Both companies spent 2024 watching the AI infrastructure windfall go largely to one competitor. What separated them was not 2024 but the five years before it. AMD's Zen architecture had systematically recaptured server market share that Intel had held for a generation. Intel's server CPU share fell from 64.4% to 54.9% in the single quarter ending March 2026. AMD gained almost everything it lost. Intel is not finished. Its stock is up 222% in 2026, more than AMD's 185%, as CEO Lip-Bu Tan executes a turnaround anchored in the foundry business. But the gap Intel would need to close to reach $1 trillion is $352 billion, and every analyst estimate for AMD's 2027 data center revenue, ranging from $40 billion to $70 billion, points only higher.

## The Deal That Anchors the Forecast

On July 22, 2026, AMD announced that Anthropic would deploy up to 2 gigawatts of AMD Instinct MI450 GPUs, the largest single AI chip commitment from a hyperscaler outside Nvidia's orbit. AMD committed a $5 billion equity investment in Anthropic alongside the hardware deal. The first gigawatt of deployment begins in the first half of 2027. The deal matters for one precise reason: AMD's $1 trillion valuation is built on a forecast, not just current earnings. Data center revenue of $6.7 billion in Q2 2026 is already extraordinary. But the market is pricing 2027, when the Anthropic deployment ramps and AMD expects data center revenue to more than double. Lisa Su herself noted the planning horizon: "You can't just wake up one morning and say I want a gigawatt of compute tomorrow. You actually have to plan 12 to 24 months in advance." That is exactly what the market is doing. The trillion-dollar valuation is the market's answer to a question about 2027, not a verdict on today.
