That made last month the joint hottest in recorded human history, tied with July 2023 at 16.95 degrees. The gap between the two months is 0.01 degrees, smaller than the margin of error. Copernicus treats them as equal. The figure that matters more is the anomaly: 1.65 degrees above the pre-industrial baseline of 1850 to 1900. That pushed August 2026 past the 1.5 degree threshold set by the Paris Agreement as the upper target for global warming. It is the first month to do so since November 2025, when the El Nino cycle was still feeding energy into the system. This time, El Nino is back. The 2003 record stood for 23 years. It is now gone. The August average land temperature across Europe reached 20.26 degrees Celsius, 1.10 degrees above the 1991 to 2020 average. In the twelve months to August 2026, the 12-month running average has been above 1.5 degrees for most of the past two years. The months that fell below the threshold in early 2026 were the exception.
