He Waited 17 Years. He Won It Once. He Left on His Own Terms.
On August 31, 2026, Lionel Messi posted a letter to Instagram and retired from international football. He was 39 years old, had played 207 matches for Argentina, scored 125 goals, and won one World Cup. Two days earlier, his father Jorge had died following an illness. The letter, written on July 21 the morning after Argentina lost the 2026 World Cup final to Spain, had been sitting unpublished for six weeks. He held it until he was ready.

The Number That Stands Alone
125 goals in 207 matches. Gabriel Batistuta, the previous Argentina record holder, scored 56 in 78. Messi scored more than twice as many and played nearly three times as many games. His 125 are also more than any other player in South American international football history. Cristiano Ronaldo, the only man with more international goals in men's football, has 146 for Portugal and has not announced his retirement. The gap between them is 21 goals. The gap between Messi and every other Argentine who ever played is 69 goals.

Six World Cups, and What Each One Cost
Messi's first World Cup was Germany 2006. He was 18 years and 358 days old, making him the youngest Argentine to play at a tournament at that time. Argentina went out in the quarterfinals. In South Africa 2010, they lost the quarterfinals to Germany 4-0. In Brazil 2014, Messi carried the team to the final, won the Golden Ball as the tournament's best player, and lost to Germany in extra time. In Russia 2018, Argentina were eliminated in the round of 16 by France. Four tournaments. Four exits before or at the final. Seventeen years of trying.

Qatar 2022: The One He Needed

Messi published his retirement letter six weeks after he wrote it. He did not elaborate beyond the personal cost of the decision, and did not need to.
