The Inner Core (solid) The solid inner core has been slowing since around 2008 and is now rotating slightly slower than the rest of the planet. This appears to be part of a roughly 70-year oscillation. It was spinning faster in the 1970s, overtook the surface, and is now lagging behind. Scientists infer this from seismic doublets: pairs of near-identical earthquakes years apart whose wave patterns shift, revealing that the internal structure has moved.

The Outer Core (liquid) The liquid outer core normally flows westward in a pattern that has been stable for decades. The August 2026 study found a dramatic reversal: a strong eastward current appeared beneath the Pacific around 2010, was already slowing by 2020, and is now the dominant feature in that region. The study used 28 years of satellite magnetometer data to reconstruct how the flow changed. The researchers believe the two reversals, inner and outer, are connected.
