What Made Mohenjo-daro Different

\- \[icon:HOME\] No royal quarter. No palace structure has ever been found, in any excavation layer. No monument was erected to any ruler, living or dead. Power, if it existed, left no physical trace above the street.

\- \[icon:TRENDING\_UP\] Public infrastructure as policy. The famous drainage system, brick-lined channels running beneath every street, served all neighbourhoods equally. Streets and sewers were not a gift from above; they were the city itself.

\- \[icon:SCIENCE\] Trade without monopoly. Standardised weights and stone seals used for commerce have been found in ordinary homes, not just warehouses or administrative buildings. Trade was not reserved for an elite. Anyone with a seal could deal.

\- \[icon:CHART\] Equality and productivity rose together. The period with the lowest residential inequality coincided with the most precise street alignment and the most complete drainage integration. The city planned better when it was more equal.

\- \[icon:CLOCK\] The gap shrank over centuries. This was not a founding ideal that eroded over time. The Gini coefficient fell across four centuries of urban growth, from 0.39 to 0.23. Mohenjo-daro got more equal the longer it survived.

\[icon:MAP\] Where It Stood Mohenjo-daro sits in present-day Sindh province, Pakistan, on the right bank of the Indus River. At its height, around 2000 BC, it was among the five largest cities on Earth, contemporary with pharaonic Egypt and Sumerian Mesopotamia. Unlike those civilisations, it left no ruler's name behind.

\[icon:SCIENCE\] How Inequality Was Measured The GINI archaeological project standardised a method: measure residential floor areas, then apply the Gini coefficient, the same statistic used today to track income inequality between countries. A score of 0 is perfect equality; 1 is total concentration. Mohenjo-daro's late-phase score of 0.23 sits below modern Denmark.

The study, led by Dr. Adam Green with co-authors Iqtedar Alam and Cameron Petrie, was published in Antiquity (DOI: 10.15184/aqy.2026.10359) on 18 May 2026. It forms part of the broader GINI (Global Dynamics of Inequality) project, which has now calculated Gini coefficients for hundreds of ancient settlements. Mohenjo-daro's late-phase figure of 0.23 is among the lowest ever recorded for an urban centre of its size anywhere in the ancient world.
