# How Scientists Are Killing Forever Chemicals

"Researchers at Aarhus University discovered that intense UV light at wavelengths below 300 nanometres generates hydrogen radicals from water itself. Those radicals strip fluorine atoms from PFAS chains one by one, a process called defluorination. No added chemicals required. The compounds break down into smaller, less persistent molecules. Published in Environmental Science and Technology, April 2026.

"A team at Flinders University in South Australia engineered molecular cages sized to snap around PFAS molecules, including the short-chain varieties that conventional activated-carbon filters cannot capture. In lab tests, the cages eliminated up to 98 percent of PFAS from water samples and remained effective after multiple uses. The cages are reusable and recyclable.

"Scientists at Oxford and Colorado State University combined PFAS with potassium phosphate salts, then milled the mixture using ball bearings under controlled conditions. The mechanical energy broke the carbon-fluorine bonds and liberated fluorine in a recoverable form. The result: PFAS destroyed, useful fluorine compounds recovered for industrial reuse. A rare win-win.

"A fourth approach uses ultrasound to create and collapse microscopic bubbles in water. The collapse generates intense local heat, thousands of degrees for a microsecond, enough to snap carbon-fluorine bonds at the hot spot. The process is energy-intensive but scalable and requires no added reagents.

"None of the four methods has yet been deployed at municipal water-treatment scale. Costs remain high, throughput is limited, and regulatory frameworks for disposing of degradation by-products are still being written. The EPA issued interim guidance on PFAS destruction and disposal in April 2026. Researchers at multiple institutions describe the next two years as the critical scale-up window.

The 4-parts-per-trillion EPA drinking water limit for PFOA and PFOS, established in 2024, is among the most stringent environmental standards ever set. To put that in perspective: 4 ppt is roughly one drop of water in 15 Olympic swimming pools. Many US municipal water systems do not yet meet the standard.

PFAS were first synthesised in the 1930s. DuPont commercially adopted polytetrafluoroethylene (Teflon) in 1946. 3M manufactured PFOS for decades before phasing it out in 2002 after internal studies revealed it accumulating in human blood. Both companies faced major litigation settlements. DuPont's Camp Lejeune-era exposure cases are still being litigated in 2026.
