Nintendo launched the Switch 2 in June 2025. By March 31, 2026, it had shipped 19.86 million units worldwide, the fastest hardware launch in Nintendo's history and enough to outsell Sony's PlayStation 5 in a head to head quarter. With Mario Kart World in the box and a deep first year library, the Switch 2 turned into a cultural moment as much as a hardware cycle.

The Switch 2 beat that by five million, and arrived on a market where the PS5 had already been running for five years. Price increase incoming. Nintendo announced on May 9, 2026 that the Switch 2 will rise from 449.99 USD to 499.99 USD effective September 1, 2026, citing a global memory shortage. The Japan price also increases on May 25. Nintendo is forecasting 16.5 million units for year two, down from year one, as launch concentration eases. Buyers who want to avoid the price rise have until August.
