The Bridge Over the Ice
The Trift bridge is one of the longest and highest pedestrian suspension bridges in the Alps, 170 metres across and 100 metres above a gorge that was once filled by the Trift glacier. The retreat of the ice cut off the old approach, so the bridge was built to reconnect the path to the Trift hut. The walk in starts with a small cable car then climbs a steep airy trail above the gorge.

The small Trift cable car runs from near Gadmen on the Susten pass road. It is popular, so book a slot or go early in summer.

The path beyond the cable car is a genuine mountain trail, steep and exposed in places. The bridge itself sways and is not for severe vertigo.
