From Wasserauen the walk up takes barely an hour on a forestry road, gentle enough for families and reachable by train from St. Gallen. Two mountain inns sit on the shore and serve Alpstein cheese made a few metres away. :NOTE Wasserauen is the end of the Appenzeller Bahn line, under an hour from St. Gallen with one change in Appenzell. No car needed. :LINK https://www.appenzell.ch/en/alpstein/hiking/ Appenzellerland trail guide
