The Boulder in the Sky
Kjeragbolten is a round boulder jammed in a rock cleft high above the Lysefjord, with a 1000 metre drop straight below the stone. Reaching it means a demanding hike over three steep climbs, several aided by fixed chains, across bare Norwegian rock. The boulder itself you step out onto for the photograph, nothing but air and fjord beneath your feet.

The trailhead at Oygardstol is reached by mountain road from Lysebotn. The season runs roughly June to September once the rock is snow free.

Three steep chain assisted climbs make this harder than the distance suggests. Wet rock is treacherous, and the drop at the boulder is absolute.
