Diana Gabaldon's 1991 debut follows Claire Randall, a former British combat nurse who in 1945 is visiting the Scottish Highlands with her husband Frank. Gabaldon wrote Outlander as a practice novel, intending never to publish it. She posted chapters online in an early internet forum as she wrote and was urged into publication by the response. The series now spans nine main novels.
