Connell and Marianne grow up in the same small town in Sligo, Ireland. At school they are a secret. At university the dynamic reverses. Sally Rooney's second novel is about two people who keep almost saying the thing. 273 pages.

Rooney wrote Normal People as a dialogue experiment. Most of the novel advances through conversation. She does not use quotation marks.
