Three forces pushed Virgin Media O2 to act

First, the debt load. Virgin Media O2 carries more than £22 billion in debt after Liberty Global and Telefonica merged their UK businesses in 2021. Servicing that debt leaves almost no room for underperformance. Second, competition. BT's £400m emergency rescue takeover of TalkTalk in 2026 handed BT a bigger share of the broadband market. VMO2 lost a net 23,300 fixed-line customers in Q3 2026 alone, bringing its total down to 5.5 million. Alt-net providers have also taken share at the budget end. Third, technology. The company has launched a voice AI agent to handle broadband fault calls and expects AI-driven automation to cut head-office and back-office costs substantially over the next two years. As a result, fibre roll-out investment beyond existing partner commitments will be halted, while 5G Standalone (5G+) investment continues.

"

The direction we are setting today paves the way for the next chapter of Virgin Media O2: a company that will be leaner, clearer on priorities and faster in delivery. Standing still and doing what we have always done is not an option.
