The Mothman of Point Pleasant
Beginning in November 1966, residents of Point Pleasant, West Virginia reported a tall winged figure with glowing red eyes near an old munitions site they called the TNT area. The sightings ran for about a year. They ended the same month a local bridge collapsed and killed 46 people. The two events have been linked in folklore ever since.

The bridge connection
The official investigation blamed the Silver Bridge collapse on a single fractured eyebar, a hidden crack that routine inspection could not catch. There is no official finding that links the Mothman sightings to the disaster. The timing alone gave the legend its lasting power.
Sceptics suggest the witnesses saw a large barred owl or a sandhill crane, both of which can look strange and reflect light at night.
Believers point to the sheer number of reports and the eerie timing with the bridge collapse. The town now holds a yearly festival in the creature's name.
