Antoine de Saint-Exupery's 1943 novella follows a pilot who crash-lands in the Sahara and encounters a small boy who has come from a tiny asteroid where he tended a single rose. As the Little Prince recounts his journey between planets and the peculiar adults he met along the way, a story about what it means to love and to be responsible for something fragile emerges. Saint-Exupery dedicated the book to his childhood friend Leon Werth and to the child that friend once was. The book has been translated into over 300 languages and dialects and remains one of the most sold books in history with over 200 million copies.

Saint-Exupery wrote the novel while living as a wartime exile in New York in 1942. He was deeply unhappy there, missing France and worried about the war. He drew the illustrations himself in the same months he wrote the text.
Saint-Exupery disappeared over the Mediterranean in July 1944 while on a reconnaissance mission for the Free French Air Force. His plane was eventually found on the seabed in 2000. He was 44 years old.
