Dumas serialised the novel in a Paris journal in 1844 and 1845, publishing it in short installments. He was known to employ writing assistants though the story and voice are considered entirely his own.
The novel has inspired over 200 adaptations across film, television, theatre, and manga. The 2002 film with Jim Caviezel is among the most well-known versions. The book itself has never gone out of print in any major language.
