Wind Gap
Gillian Flynn's 2006 debut novel follows Camille Preaker, a journalist at a Chicago newspaper who is sent to Wind Gap, Missouri to report on the murders of two young girls. Wind Gap is the town she grew up in and fled. Her mother Adora is a Southern belle with a need for control that is more dangerous than it appears. The novel is a gothic psychological thriller about female violence, mothers and daughters, and the damage that small towns can do to the people they raise. Adapted into a critically acclaimed HBO miniseries starring Amy Adams in 2018.

Flynn wrote the novel while working as a television critic and has said that female violence and dark female psychology fascinated her because they were so rarely explored honestly in fiction without being either pathologised or glamorised.
The HBO adaptation starred Amy Adams and Patricia Clarkson and won two Golden Globe Awards in 2019. Flynn wrote or co-wrote several of the episodes and was a producer on the series.
