Phantom Blade Zero arrives October 29 on PS5 and PC, and most coverage has focused on its look rather than its systems. That is a mistake. The game's Sha-Chi meter, its color-coded enemy attacks, its eight different endings, and its "Kungfupunk" setting add up to something genuinely unlike anything else releasing this autumn. This guide assembles the confirmed mechanics, the story setup, the four difficulty tiers, and the two editions in one place. Developer: S-GAME. Engine: Unreal Engine 5. Single-player only. No Xbox release announced. Pre-load opens the same day as launch (no early pre-load window). PC via Steam and Epic Games Store. As of October 22, 2026.

None; no earlier Phantom Blade game needed
S-GAME coined the term "Kungfupunk" for the game's visual and tonal identity: traditional Chinese martial arts, steampunk machinery, and body modification sit alongside one another without explanation. The world is Wulin, the same setting as S-GAME's earlier Phantom Blade and Rainblood mobile games, but no knowledge of those is required. The tone is closer to Resident Evil or Silent Hill than a straight martial-arts drama. Occult forces and memory echoes thread through the setting. Martial arts star Donnie Yen serves as both creative consultant and plays the character Mo Yuan through motion capture and facial performance. The world splits into eight interconnected, handcrafted regions. The structure is neither fully open-world nor fully linear: areas connect, and which ones you reach depends partly on which quests you pursue.
The player character is Soul, an elite assassin employed by a powerful organisation called the Order. At the start of the game, Soul is framed for murdering the Order's patriarch, hunted by its members, and stabbed through the heart. A figure known only as the Flesh Sculptor revives him with a tainted replacement heart, but the repair is temporary. Soul has 66 days to find a cure before the wound kills him. The framing makes him both hunter and hunted. The criminal conspiracy Soul uncovers while trying to stay alive stretches across all of Wulin. Which parts of it you expose depends on side quests: eight different endings reflect which quests you finish, which items you collect, and which paths you take through the story. Side quests are not optional padding here; they change the main narrative's outcome.
Every fight in Phantom Blade Zero runs on a shared resource called Sha-Chi, which both Soul and every enemy manage simultaneously. Think of it as a hybrid of a stamina bar and a posture gauge. Normal attacks and dodges cost nothing. Blocking drains it. Let Sha-Chi reach zero and you are "Breached," a state that leaves you briefly helpless. Enemies can be Breached the same way. The key recovery mechanic: swapping your primary weapon mid-fight restores Sha-Chi instantly, though the swap has a cooldown. This makes weapon selection a live tactical decision rather than a setup choice at the menu.
Normal attack or dodge
Sha-Chi cost: none
Block
Sha-Chi cost: drains per hit absorbed; repeated blocking = Breach
Breached (Sha-Chi at zero)
Helpless state; same Breach rules apply to enemies
Weapon swap
Restores Sha-Chi instantly; swap has a cooldown
Brutal Blow (orange glow)
Block drains heavy Sha-Chi; best to dodge instead
Fatal Blow (red glow)
Cannot be blocked; must be dodged or you take full damage
Ghoststep
Parry or perfect dodge triggers a teleport behind the enemy
Soul carries two primary Blades and two secondary Phantom Edges into any fight, chosen from over 30 Blades and 25 Phantom Edges. Each primary Blade has its own skill tree and an ultimate attack called a Power Surge. Phantom Edges cover ranged and heavy options: cannons, lances, axes, and hammers. Different weapon combinations produce genuinely different play styles. A player who builds around the Sha-Chi swap recovery mechanic will play differently from one who invests in Phantom Edge attacks. There is no class system; build identity comes entirely from weapon choice and skill tree investment.
