The Dream of the Farm
John Steinbeck's 1937 novella follows George Milton and Lennie Small, two displaced ranch workers during the Great Depression who share a dream of one day owning a small piece of land where Lennie can tend rabbits. When they arrive at a new ranch in California's Salinas Valley, their dream comes closer than ever before. But Lennie's great physical strength and childlike mind create a tension the world will not allow to resolve peacefully. The novel was a bestseller and adapted into a hit Broadway play within the same year of publication.

Steinbeck's dog actually ate an early draft of the manuscript. He had to rewrite it from memory over a two-month period. He was philosophical about it, saying the dog had not been entirely wrong to do so.
The novel was adapted into a Broadway play in 1937, the same year it was published, and won the New York Drama Critics Circle Award. It is among the most frequently banned books in American schools.
