The 2026-27 NBA season tips off on Tuesday, October 20, with a tripleheader on NBC and Peacock. The centrepiece is New York hosting Philadelphia at 7 PM ET, a night that carries more ceremony than most: Adam Silver presents championship rings to Jalen Brunson, Karl-Anthony Towns and the Knicks, and a banner rises above Madison Square Garden for the first time in 53 years. Then Philadelphia tips off, with LeBron James making his 76ers debut, and the night ends in San Antonio with an immediate Western Conference Finals rematch between Oklahoma City and the Spurs. As of October 3, 2026.

Three games on NBC and Peacock, all of them with real stakes. The Pistons and Celtics open the afternoon as the top two Eastern Conference seeds from last season. The Knicks host the 76ers for ring night and LeBron's first start in a Philadelphia uniform. And OKC visits San Antonio in the first meeting since the Spurs pushed the Thunder to seven games in the Western Conference Finals before losing. Boston won 58 games last season. Detroit won 56. Both held together over the summer. The East is not waiting for anyone.

New York beat San Antonio in the Finals. All five starters, including Brunson, Towns, OG Anunoby, Mikal Bridges and Josh Hart, return for the title defence. Mitchell Robinson is the only rotation player who left. The Spurs will be in the building on Christmas Day looking to settle it. Victor Wembanyama won Defensive Player of the Year and averaged 28 points in the Finals. The Spurs are not a supporting act.
James signed with Philadelphia this summer after the Lakers missed the playoffs. The 76ers also traded Paul George to Boston for Jaylen Brown, giving them a starting five of James, Brown, Joel Embiid, Tyrese Maxey and a frontcourt that has the talent to reach the Finals. His first game in a Philadelphia uniform is against the defending champions, on banner night, at Madison Square Garden, in front of the most hostile crowd the Eastern Conference offers. It is a good problem to have.
The other major move of the summer: Giannis left Milwaukee and signed with the Heat. Miami now pairs him with Jimmy Butler and Tyler Herro. It is the East's second most-watched subplot entering the season, behind only the Knicks and 76ers.
