The Pearl of the Dolomites
Lago di Braies is the lake that put the Dolomites on a thousand screens, a sheet of emerald water under the grey wall of the Croda del Becco with a wooden boathouse on its near shore. The loop around the lake is short and almost flat, half on boardwalk, half on a rougher path through the trees on the far bank. Rowing boats wait at the old boathouse to take you out onto the water.
The lake is at the head of the Val di Braies and gets very busy. Arrive early or late, and note that summer access by car is limited and ticketed.
