The Matterhorn in the Water
The Riffelsee is a small dark lake at 2757 metres that holds the most famous reflection in the Alps, the Matterhorn standing on its head in still water. The cog railway lifts you to the Gornergrat at over 3000 metres with the Monte Rosa wall and the Gorner glacier filling the view, then the path drops gently past the lake. On a windless morning the reflection is flawless.
The Gornergrat Bahn climbs from Zermatt in around 35 minutes. Walk down rather than up and let the railway do the climbing. Best reflection before the wind starts.
