The Steepest Way Up
The Gelmersee is a turquoise reservoir held in raw Grimsel granite, and the way up is half the adventure, a funicular built for dam construction that climbs at a 106 percent gradient, among the steepest in Europe. From the top station a rough shore path traces the lake under bare polished rock. The water is an electric blue green fed by glacier melt off the Grimsel massif.

The Gelmerbahn funicular runs from the Grimsel pass road and is popular, book a time slot in summer.
The shore path is rough and rocky with some exposure above the water. Good footwear matters and it is no place for small children near the edge.
