The Rock Amphitheatre

The Creux du Van is the Jura's most dramatic feature, a horseshoe of vertical cliff over a kilometre wide and 160 metres deep, carved by ice into the limestone. The loop from Noiraigue climbs through forest to the rim, where ibex and chamois graze and the whole arc of the Alps fills the southern horizon. The drop at the edge is sheer and unfenced.

Noiraigue is on the rail line through the Val de Travers, easy from Neuchâtel. Bring a head for heights, the rim path runs right along the unfenced cliff edge.
