Nested Across Time
David Mitchell's 2004 novel opens six stories and closes them in reverse order, like a set of Russian dolls. A Pacific voyage in 1849. A young composer's letters from 1930s Belgium. Mitchell structured the novel as a sextet, a musical form in which six voices play simultaneously and separately. He has cited Italo Calvino and Donna Tartt among the writers who influenced his structural ambition.
The 2012 Wachowski and Tom Tykwer film adaptation ran nearly three hours and cast each actor across multiple stories and time periods, including in roles of different races and genders, generating significant controversy.
