What drove the record result

The US-led war on Iran has pushed Brent crude from roughly $73 a barrel before the conflict to about $117 on Friday. Disrupted refining capacity across the Middle East sent BP's refining indicator margin to $46.7 per barrel in Q3 2026, nearly triple the $15.8 it earned a year earlier. CEO Meg O'Neill said refineries ran at 96.5 percent availability, close to capacity. Revenue rose 41.8 percent year-on-year to $68.4 billion. The strong refining and gas trading result is the main driver against Q2 2026.

Refineries have been running close to capacity to make up for shortfalls, shipping has been taking different and longer routes, and releases from strategic and commercial reserves are helping to bridge supply gaps.

Green energy writedown runs alongside record profits

BP recorded a $4 billion impairment charge in Q3 linked mainly to offshore wind, its solar subsidiary Lightsource BP, and other low-carbon ventures. That reduces reported net profit to $4.7 billion attributable to shareholders. O'Neill acknowledged the hit: "We know we need to be better stewards of our shareholders' capital." The company said it would use part of the surplus cash to settle remaining liabilities from the 2010 Deepwater Horizon disaster. Combined profits for Europe's six largest oil companies reached $89 billion in 2026, according to Global Witness.
