Remarque was himself a World War I veteran who drew on his experiences and those of his comrades. The Nazis banned and burned the novel in 1933. Remarque fled Germany and was later stripped of his citizenship.
The novel sold 2.5 million copies in its first 18 months of publication across 25 languages. The 2022 Netflix adaptation won four Academy Awards including Best International Feature Film, a century after the events it depicts.
